Very good analysis, Frank. I think that a big misconception that analysts and investors have is that ATM and SONET are two distinct and different beasts. Most ATM applications still require a SONET ADM of some sort to connect from CO to CO. The reason why ATM might fade away, is that IP over SONET can provide the same QoS benefits (presumably) that ATM can, and it can eliminate the need for an ATM switch. SONET is not going anywhere soon, and it IS required in DWDM applications, as well.

I read an interesting article in this week's EE Times that talked about the new startups doing Data/Voice switches that are aiming at helping switch traditional ILECs and the new CLECs to the IP world.
Here's the URL for it: eetimes.com

Anyway, my $0.02... You're right. TLAB is worried about POS, as well they should be. Lucent and Nortel ought to be worried about it, too. If it replaces ATM, (which I don't think it will completely), they will have to shift to the new world of IP.

Thoughts?
