Pruguy,

I was recently involved in a roadshow for the launch of Netware 5, and I agree, it is a pretty good product. NOVL just doesn't have the "hearts and minds" that MSFT has.

I got the impression from the NOVL guys that they do not see themselves as direct competition to MSFT anymore, they consistently harp on the fact that they have NDS for NT. (Netware Directory Services is a user friendly way of managing servers and network resources, simplifying logons to multiple domains etcetera)

I see NOVL as a strong niche player.

Hello:
wouldn't that be a little expensive for CPQ?
At the last count, and if i remember corectly, NOVL was at $20 and had about 400 mil shares outstanding.
Regards,
Satish

NOVL does not make sense to me. Too expensive; major cultural integration issues. But on the other hand, NDS seems to have a leg up on ADS with a 1 year+ lead time. I am not sure that it fits with CPQ's internet push though.

Mike -
From a technology standpoint, CPQ already owns components that are as far ahead of Novl as Novl is ahead of MSFT. Technology is not the issue. A Novl play would put CPQ into competition with their closest partner with little to gain - CPQ already gets the lion's share of Novl business, with something like 60% of the installed base. Getting the other 40% would be hard even if CPQ owned the company - more likely the new market would shrink to CPQ's current Novl numbers. All in all not an attractive proposition.
