BEFORE THE BELL - Microsoft surges

NEW YORK, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) surged in pre-opening trade Wednesday after quarterly earnings easily beat Wall Street forecasts.

Microsoft was up at 167 on the Instinet electronic trading system from a Tuesday closing price of 155-5/8. The shares had risen to 163-1/4 in after-hours trade Tuesday, following release of results.

Microsoft reported second-quarter earnings per diluted share of $0.73, up from $0.42. The First Call consensus estimate was $0.59.

Other big computer-related issues also were stronger.

Texas Instruments Inc. (NYSE:TXN - news) rose to 96 from a close of 93 after the computer chip maker reported fourth-quarter earnings that easily topped analysts' consensus estimates.

International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - news) was up at 194-3/8 from a close of 191-12/16 and semiconductor maker Intel Corp (Nasdaq:INTC - news) rose to 142 from a 139-6/16 close.

Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:CSCO - news) strengthened to 108-1/4 from a 106-6/16 close and Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq:DELL - news) was up at 84 from a close of 82-2/16.

Lycos Inc. (Nasdaq:LCOS - news) was up at 119 from a 112-15/16 close after the Internet search company said its Lycos Network had boosted its share of the Web audience to 46.5 percent, narrowly trailing Yahoo! Inc (Nasdaq:YHOO - news).

Western Digital Corp. (NYSE:WDC - news) slipped to 19-3/4 from a close of 20-5/16 after the hard drive company posted a fiscal second-quarter loss and said it would lay off about 5.8 percent of its workers
