Good point. I am not sure that CPQ didn't just stumble into the net with the AltaVista site. When they purchased Digital no mention of that was ever made that I am aware of. Also, I think DELL would be reluctant to change the all time winning strategy of the late "90s.
As long as Michael runs the company I don't know if they would expand direction? CPQ being run by a board as opposed to the founder I think makes a big difference. Also, CPQ is playing catchup and thus has to be more inventive.

I bought 1000 shares on the original IPO of CPQ at $12 and sold them when they got to $28 and laughed all the way to the bank. I then quit laughing when they passed $100 per share later on. Live and learn.
