About the only item I agreed with in the speech was:

"Mr. Clinton also offered another goody to retirees: a promise to back
Republicans' longstanding effort to lift penalties on wages that retirees under age 70 can earn. Currently, a retiree between 65 and 69 can earn $15,500 a year without losing any benefits; for a retiree earning more than that, the government withholds $1 for every $3 in wages. Retirees under 65 face stricter rules. This "earnings test," the White House said Tuesday, "primarily serves to confuse people and to discourage them from working.""

Besides, the best reason is that people who need to work to maintain their home should not be faced with such gestapo tactics as above. It penalizes the working poor elderly in favor of the non-working rich elderly.

Last night's grab bag of entitlements proposals just goes to show how stupid the liberals on this board were or that they are even more liberal than the average liberal Democrat congressman. They've been calling Clinton centrist. Nothing could be further from the truth.

He's also diverting some of the "surplus" funds to fund a bankrupt Medicare/Medicaid system.

Virtually nothing he proposed has a chance of being enacted by this Congress.
It will be interesting to see the republicans run in 2000 on the record of having done nothing.
