RESEARCH ALERT- Salomon ups Merrill to buy

NEW YORK, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Salomon Smith Barney on Wednesday raised its rating of brokerage firm Merrill Lynch and Co. Inc. to a buy from an outperform because the firm is likely to increase profits this year and its stock is undervalued.

-- ''It's a combination of valuation -- Merrill has lagged its peers -- and on the other hand the regaining earning momentum is such that the stock looks good here,'' analyst Guy Moszkowski told Reuters. ''Although the (fourth-quarter) earnings were not so great, they are evidence of how the earnings could get much better in the next quarter.''

-- Merrill on Tuesday reported a better-than-expected $359 million profit, or $0.86 a share, in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 25. The results marked a 23 percent drop from the $469 million profit, or $1.15 a share, Merrill posted in the 1997 fourth quarter.

-- Merrill's stock price in recent months has lagged that of rival Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co. (NYSE:MWD - news), which reported record results for its fiscal fourth quarter ended Nov. 30. Moszkowski keep an outperform rating on Morgan Stanley.

-- Merrill's stock up 2-1/4 to 73-91/16 on Wednesday morning.
