Number of NCR Terabyte-size Data Warehouses Jumps 90 Percent in 6 Months; Growth Underscores Data Warehouses' Critical Business Role
NCR leads the industry with 'Fabulous 50' warehouses that boast one-plus terabyte of user data
DAYTON, Ohio, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Reaching an industry-milestone, NCR Corporation today named its 100th terabyte-sized data warehouse to the NCR "Terabyte Hall of Fame." Even more importantly, 50 of NCR's "Hall of Fame" warehouses -- the "Fabulous 50" -- now have one terabyte or more of business data in their Teradata(R) Warehouses.
"It is very significant that NCR has 50 Teradata decision support systems with more than a terabyte of user data," said Richard Winter, president of the well-respected industry analyst firm Winter Corporation. "There are many fewer decision support systems with a terabyte of user data than most people realize. NCR's 'Fabulous 50' are a testimony to the robustness and scalability of Teradata. This milestone is consistent with the findings in the Winter Corporation's Very Large Database (VLDB) survey over the past several years, which show widespread use of NCR Teradata large scale decision support systems."
Since mid-1998, NCR has tripled the number of data warehouses with a terabyte or more of user data and doubled the number of systems with a terabyte of disk. One terabyte of information is the equivalent of 250 million pages of text.
"Teradata is the database of choice for customers who are serious about data warehousing," said Vickie Farrell, assistant vice president of Teradata marketing at NCR Corporation. "And organizations with a terabyte of data have made a significant investment in their data warehouse."
Data Warehousing Heavyweights
NCR's "Terabyte Hall of Fame" data warehouse customers span the globe as leaders in all industries, including the financial, retail, telecommunications, and transportation industries. These companies, many of them familiar both to consumers and IT industry watchers, include The Boeing Company, which recently was recognized as having the 100th "Hall of Fame" warehouse and is NCR's 50th data warehouse with one terabyte of user data.
Additional well-known businesses and organizations that have NCR Teradata- based data warehouses with a terabyte or more of user data include Barclays (financial services); BELGACOM (Belgian telecom); Boeing; J.C. Penney Company, Inc.; Kmart; Sears, Roebuck and Co.; Telekom Austria AG; Union Pacific Railroad; and Wal-Mart.
Many of these "Fabulous 50" customers are using the power of their Teradata relational databases to transform massive amounts of data collected into meaningful information, which they use to create more profitable, longer- lasting customer relationships. Others, like Boeing, use their data warehouses to increase internal operating efficiencies, directly impacting their bottom lines.
"NCR's Teradata Warehouse solution has allowed us to consolidate hundreds of disparate databases into one large system," said Betty Kight, director Enterprise Data Warehousing, Union Pacific Technologies. "The result has been substantial gains in efficiency, millions of dollars in savings, and enhanced customer service."
"Our multi-terabyte data warehouse provides essential decision support information daily, to our retail businesses," said Hank Steermann, business support manager at Sears, Roebuck & Co. "With NCR's Teradata database we can process large amounts of data and create a single source of information for multiple business users. We use our data warehouse to better serve our customers by analyzing our merchandise mix, regional buying trends, and inventory status."
From Gigabytes to Terabytes
"The physical size of data warehouses has been growing even faster than we thought," said Aaron Zornes, executive vice president and director Application Delivery Strategies, META Group. "Our most recent data warehouse survey of 2,500 such projects showed us that 30% of users are planning to grow their data warehouses to more than one terabyte in the next 12 to 24 months."
As organizations grow their data warehouses -- and the amount of business data they hold -- NCR can provide fully scalable, end-to-end Teradata Warehouse solutions that grow with the business.
"Analyzing detailed data is where the big payoff is in data warehousing," stated NCR's Farrell. "Because detailed data volumes grow quickly, managing large amounts of data is a critical issue for more and more businesses."
NCR has helped its customers develop some of the world's largest data warehouses to handle their massive amounts of data. Because many organizations start with small amounts of data, NCR has developed a starter data warehouse program, called RightSTART, which allows businesses to easily implement a warehouse solution that delivers quick Return on Investment (ROI) and is fully scalable for future growth. The RightSTART program enables a company to get a data warehouse up and running in 90 days for less than $500,000.
