AOL Has Most Popular Sites In Dec.-Report
NEW YORK (Reuters) - America Online Inc. (NYSE:AOL - news), the No. 1 provider of online services, drew in 54.5 percent of Internet users in December, outpacing its nearest competitor, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news), by more than six percentage points, research company Media Metrix reported Wednesday.
Internet search firm Lycos Inc. (Nasdaq:LCOS - news) continued to improve its rating, raising it over a point to 46.5 percent after its $83 million acquisition of Wired Digital.
The Lycos jump opened up a wide gap between the top four networks and No. 5 company GeoCities, a community of Web sites, which had 33.4 percent reach and 18.98 visitors. Lycos had 26.38 million visitors in December, New York-based Media Metrix reported.
Some 30.97 million individuals traveled last month to America Online Web sites where they accessed the company's services, which include news, Internet search and e-mail.
Around 27.48 million visited Microsoft sites, which include MSN Expedia, a leading travel site, the MSN shopping channel and Hotmail, a popular free e-mail service.
Yahoo! sites drew 48.2 percent of Internet users, the same as during November, with 27.38 million people visiting yahoo.com, where they accessed Yahoo!'s news, Internet search, and e-mail services.
''The battle for Internet eyeballs is evolving into a waltz of elephants, with AOL, Yahoo!, Microsoft and, arguably, Lycos hogging the center of the floor,'' CIBC Oppenheimer said in a report.
Media Metrix, in its ''Top 25 Web Properties'' report said it measures ''reach'' as the percent of Web-active individuals who visited a site once in the given month. The company combines its findings from a sample of more than 40,000 people under measurement in U.S. homes and businesses to calculate its top 25 Web properties.
All of the top 10 sites are so-called ''portals'', or a point from which Web users can begin their Internet journey
