If you think the company is in the midst of a turnaround and the company's shares have fallen out of favor, you can purchase a major interest. Then you can get seats on the board. Then you offer to buy the remaining shares for the current depressed market price. You put your own managers in, you clean up the mess, or sell the pieces for more than you just paid for the whole thing. If you decide to clean up the mess you wait a couple of years and do an IPO for whatever the market will bear at the time.
