NEW YORK, Jan 20 (Reuters) - JP Morgan analyst, David Barden initiated coverage of WinStar Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:WCII - news) with a buy rating and set a 12-month price target of $60 a share for the competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC).

-- Barden wrote: ''...WinStar is a leading national CLEC and one of the first to bridge the local 'last mile' with a wireless solution.''

-- ''WinStar is one of only three companies in the United States we believe has the spectrum of resources to exploit the benefits of a national wireless last mile approach.''

-- ''We project that WinStar will generate 49 percent compound annual revenue growth for 1998-2003. We believe the company's EBITDA loss will trough in 1999.''

-- Competitive local exchange carriers are entrepreneurial rivals to the Baby Bell companies and GTE Corp. (NYSE:GTE - news) that continue to have a virtual monopoly hold on local service in most regions of the United States.

-- Share price was up 1-3/16 at 45-5/8 on the Nasdaq stock market.
