Brazil Opposition Removes Bid To Thwart Fast Track Vote

Dow Jones Newswires

BRASILIA -- Brazilian opposition party leaders have withdrawn a request
to suspend voting Wednesday in the lower house of Congress on a measure
to fast track a key component of the government's fiscal stabilization
plan.

The lower house is slated to vote on a controversial measure that
increases social security taxes for civil servants and would also
require retired public workers to contribute to the bankrupt pension
system. The measure has failed four times in the past four years.

Immediately after the opposition request was withdrawn, lower house
chairman Michel Temer opened deliberations on the fast-track vote.

If the fast-track vote is approved, the actual pension legislation is
scheduled to be voted on later Wednesday.
