Paul,

I think it ISN'T SAFE - my guess is that the K6-3 may outperform the K7 since the K7 has off chip, 1/3 CPU speed L2 cache.

Are we forgetting the 128K L1 on K7? The L2 latency becomes decreasingly important as the L1 miss rate decreases.

Re: "For KNI applications"

I didn't know these existed!!

Please find me some software that will run on a PIII and not on a K6 (or a PII for that matter). I am intensely curious.

Are you serious? K7 has 128k L1 cache on chip--faster than the L2 that K6-3 has on chip. K7 will have FAST off chip L2--running at the same speed (if not multiplier) as the current PII cache SRAMs! And the PII, even thus "handicapped" versus the K6-3, is still pretty close in performance, without the K7's other advantages.

Pwengle - Re: <Kevin - Re: " Since... >

Not bad. On the topic of <For KNI applications, the K6-3 is a no-show : INCOMPATIBLE.> Who cares, since they(KNI) aren't around now, and when they are all cpus will function fine in their reduced state. By then, K7 will be out(hopefully).

We shall see.
