why should Sun's Jini be any better than Microsoft's Universal Plug and Play?

Because Microsoft's Universal Plug and Play, to my knowledge, still expects everything to be talking to a Windows PC at some point. Jini is not PC-centric, and as such doesn't rely on a particular operating system or CPU. It does require some Java technology to be in the system, but since virtually every major consumer electronics and technology vendor supports Java that shouldn't be an issue.

Besides, since when has Microsoft come up with good technology on their own?
