The Innovator's Dilemma is an excellent book, Gregg; thanks for mentioning it here. With the Q's earnings freshly released and the usual and valuable discussion taking place regarding the components of the financial results, I think this article posted on the Lu thread is a great one for deepening one's perspective about *earnings* and other financial measures:

To all - re : There is a wonderful book by Clayton Christensen entitled "The Innovator's Dilemma: When New Technologies Cause Great Firms to Fail" that I would strongly encourage you to read ...

The 1/25/99 issue of Forbes has a fairly long article about Professor Christensen.

Jon.

Gregg,

Thanks for the perceptive insight into the earnings report and various backroom dealings...

It's rational thoughts like yours, that made me what I am today... a proud Qualcomm shareholder and ex-Ericsson shareholder.

Keep up the good work, and remember...

You can always tell who the leaders are, they're the ones with all the arrows sticking out of their backs.

Gregg, all: Clayton Christensen's "Innovator's Dilemma . . ." is discussed at some length in a Forbes profile of Christensen in the current issue. [the one with Andy Grove and Christensen on the cover]
It is interesting that Grove [and other business leaders] pay this Harvard Biz Prof humongous bucks to challenge their thinking and to identify as many of the potential threats to their mainstream business that might arise from these pesky little critters as possible. Forbes gave many examples including an infamous quote from a railroad exec: "diesel engines will never replace steam" (a few years before diesel eliminated the steam engine).
Ashamed to say that I didn't even think of the Mighty Q as I read through the piece. But that's exactly what CDMA must have looked like to Ericy: a diesel engine. Good reading. SM
