North American Semiconductor Equipment Industry Post December 1998 Book-to-Bill Ratio of 0.94 Press Room - Press Release MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., January 19, 1999 -- The North American semiconductor equipment industry posted a book-to-bill ratio of 0.94 for December 1998, it was reported by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI). A book-to-bill of 0.94 means $94 in orders were received for each $100 worth of products shipped. "With the device industry showing some signs of strength in the fourth quarter, we are seeing some selective semiconductor equipment purchases," said Stanley Myers, president of SEMI. "The strength of the first quarter, however, will be key for the equipment industry. The consensus among analysts at SEMI's Industry Strategy Symposium last week was for a flat equipment market in 1999 and the next few months should test the validity of their forecasts." (Editor's Note: Summaries of information discussed at ISS U.S. 99 are available via the Internet at semi.org Three-month average shipments in December 1998 were $924 million. The figure is one percent below the November 1998 level, and is 41 percent below the December 1997 level. Three-month average bookings increased in December 1998 to $872 million. The bookings figure is 12 percent above the November 1998 level, but is 44 percent below the December 1997 level. The SEMI book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving average bookings to three-month moving average shipments. Shipments and bookings figures are in millions of U.S. dollars.
