When I was in high school my math teachers wrote me off as having no aptitude whatsoever, despite high test scores. My parents, unwilling to accept the verdict, got me a private tutor, a retired math teacher who, to my teenaged eye, looked about a thousand years old (she was probably in her 60s). When she explained things they fell into place with such an obvious and irresistable logic that virtually everything got absorbed the first time around. I never figured out exactly what she was doing that the other teachers weren't, but there was certainly something. I don't know how she stacked up as a mathematician, but she was a brilliant teacher. Had nothing but contempt for the local school system.
