Melinda's answer is correct, Moshing is similar to the slam dancing of the early punk days. However, it is slightly more organized in that there is a circular movement (generally in a counter clockwise direction) where the "moshers" are bumping, pushing, slaming and otherwise having physical contact. The Mosh Pit is where this all happens and is most often found near the front of the stage where the band is performing. Though it appears very violent and you can get hurt, there is a definite civility that can be found in a mosh pit. There are exceptions to this of course.

It has been at least 5 years since I have been in a mosh pit, so I have clearly outgrown this phase:)
