<It has also been common to have the father take the child away if it was a girl or deformed and break it's neck. We live in a far from perfect world.> Bob, I agree with you that we live in a less than perfect world. I do believe that when most women have abortions, however, they act in desperation, and their intent is to try to improve their situation. We have tinkered with nature so much over so long a period of time that maybe we lose touch with the harsh realities of survival. As part of the animal kingdom, it is not really surprising that women would not choose to bring new life into the world that they cannot nurture. As I said before, I believe this is instinctual behavior. And even though it seems horrific and harsh, even killing baby girls or deformed children makes sense if you consider that outside of western Europe and America, life for the most part is mostly an attempt at sheer survival. In many societies, girl children cost parents money because of dowries, while boy children bring them money. In many parts of the world where everyone in the family, including small children, have to be productive just to ensure that there is enough food to eat, deformed children are a drag on family energy. I am not saying that these actions by parents are positive, just that if you look at survival of the fittest and consider that most human existence is still a struggle, it makes sense. In the same vein, there are new statistics out on abortion, and it seems that a fifth of the world's pregnancies do end in abortion. The percentages are similar in developed and undeveloped countries. Where abortion is illegal it is costly and very dangerous, and still women take all the risks to have them, even though there is often a significant mortality rate. The main cause of abortions according to researchers? Inadequate availability and use of contraceptives. So if you are really serious about stopping abortions, maybe you could campaign for better sex education in America, and the worldwide distribution of contraceptive devices and birth control pills. The religious right in America is, in fact, doing everything they can to ensure that there are MORE abortions everywhere by their campaign to stop the United Nations from promoting birth control.
