Some fifteen years ago Larry Niven (Neutron Star) wrote a neat piece about time travel. He constructed a seamless logical proof of time travel's nonexistence. It boils down to:
Time travel cannot exist because if it did someone sometime would have found it and ****ed us all.

Time travel is a very popular topic in sci-fi, especially Star Trek and the other "consumer" brands. It is one of my pet peeves - the invocation of time travel is something I view as a concession of literary failure.
