He might also check to see that he has the power switch connector connected to the right pins on the mobo, or see if they are perhaps reversed. Win 98 sends a shutdown command via that connector, and if it is not connected properly, the system will not shut itself down.

Info on which connector it is should be in the mobo manual, in the same place where the HDD LED, SPEAKER, RESET, etc. pin connector instructions are. Should also be some markings on the mobo as well.

Is Anand's site down or has it moved? For the past several days I've not been able to connect to it....get a message that says the URL can't be found on the server.

Thats the first thing that I thought <gg>

I'll disable the USB ... if I can find it.. although that shouldn't be too difficult. I'll try a shutdown w/o the Matrox sw too.... maybe Gremlin there

w98 shutdown gremlins

I disabled usb...that wasn't the solution. In Help>troubleshooters the second suggestion for shutdown problems was to disable the fast shutdown feature as it has certain compatibility problems That was it.

Must be the MGA sw that fast shutdown didn't like.

Now onto NT/ mga driver solution.....
