I have a CPQ professional workstation and a deskpro - they are great machines, both running NT. I also have a Dell dimension which is running Win98 - it is also a great performer.

HP builds solid machines but I never seemed to get the performance I expected. I never liked IBM. GTW is almost the same guts as the Dell dimension (both are built from the Intel motherboard) but the Dell is better engineered from a box and servicability standpoint.

If you are into high end workstations I like CPQ a little better, but for mainstream Dell and CPQ are equally good choices. Dell's optiplex line is probably more comparable to the deskpro, and uses a Dell-designed motherboard.

For general consumer use (games, web stuff) the presario line is a great value. I bought one for my son which does full video editing - you can do a whole tape on it, even has all the standard tv jacks and s-video output. also only $2000. You can get a pretty nice machine for about $1300 in that line, and a good light-duty machine for about $700.

I know this is the CPQ thread, but do all you folks really use Compaq's ??

Yes I own a Compaq Presario 9564 tower and Presario 1625 laptop. The tower is old and has very heavy use by three people. We burned out the modem last year and replaced it. It has a number of attachments including a scanner, and runs very well, thank you.

Oh, I had a problem with the monitor shortly after I got it. Service guy came to the house in a bad snow storm picked it up, fixed it, and returned it. No charge.

The laptop is new and I haven't used it much to be honest.

Hi Helen,

Well I hate to say it, but even though I've been accumulating more CPQ stock, I use DELL computers. All things being equal, believe it or not, I just like the appearance of the Dell machines better than CPQ. Guess it's a girl thing<g>

Hello Helen,

Yes, except for my first PC [a Zenith 8088], all my computers have been Compaqs. Right now I am using a Deskpro 486/50 which I am going to replace with a Compaq Prosignia 400MHz.

The only thing holding me back from ordering the computer right now is my decision on the monitor. For a number of reasons I really do not want a regular, full sized monitor so I shall be investigating flat panel options, including the one offered by Compaq, this weekend before ordering.

I have only had one problem requiring service with either of the two Compaq PCs I have owned. The one I am using now required a new hard drive while under warranty. I called CPQ mid-morning one day and the next, someone showed up and replaced the drive.
