Why not jump on the calls now and on the announcement dump the calls and jump
on the puts. Or, is it against your religion to make money on stocks going up?

I have a smallish position in Dell LEAP puts because the stock is priced such that its capitalization--the value of all its outstanding stock--is almost twice that of GM. I refuse to believe that a company that assembles and sells computers is worth more than the largest automobile and truck manufacturer in the US (World?) . Dell is so overvalued that I am afraid to wait for another rise (which may well occur) before taking a position against its price.

Mary, Nope. I have some long calls now on decent stocks. It is against my religion to buy calls on stinko companies that are overvalued even if I think they may have a pop for no reason. That would be betting against my research, something you scoff at but which companies have paid me big bucks for in the past. I'll just wait for the big move on rationality.

However, I have played Dell in a spread conversion, very well, thank you. But there I am well protected for when it tears a hole in its safety net during the fall.

What you are talking about is not investing. It is gambling. I am a gambler, but, to use another of your terms, not with serious money. My gambling money does much better on the ponies. Yes, the trainers, owners and jockeys may be bent now and then, but, on a whole, they are much more honest than corporate honchos. <G>
