Intel Corp. is expected to announce today it has created a chip
manufacturing process that will allow it to ship 600-megahertz microprocessors
by the end of the year, people familiar with the matter say.
Intel is expected to say it will begin shipping microprocessors based
on its 0.18 micron manufacturing process, which allows the company to create
chip circuits that are 1/500th the width of a human hair, in the third
quarter. Intel officials declined to comment.
The new process will give the Santa Clara, Calif., chip giant a
manufacturing advantage over rivals Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and National
Semiconductor Corp.'s Cyrix unit, but analysts aren't certain how long the
advantage will last.
Linley Gwennap, editorial director at Micro Design Resources Inc. in
Mountain View, Calif., said Intel will start large-volume production with the
process about three to six months ahead of AMD, Sunnyvale, Calif., and
National Semiconductor, Santa Clara, Calif. But the rivals will also shift to
0.18 micron processes later this year, and they will also announce new chip
designs that will allow them to create chips that run at higher speeds.
"Intel has a temporary advantage by using its manufacturing muscle, but
the others are close behind it," said Michael Feibus, an analyst at Mercury
Research Inc. in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Intel currently uses a 0.25 micron process to make chips that run as
fast as 450 megahertz. Mr. Gwennap said that the 0.18 micron process should
enable Intel to create 600-megahertz chips in the third quarter and increase
the speed to 667 megahertz by the end of the year and up to 800 megahertz in
2000. AMD is expected to introduce K7 chips during the summer that could also
hit 600 megahertz, but Mr. Gwennap says he believes Intel should be able to
stay one or two speed levels above AMD.
In another development, Intel is expected to unveil a microprocessor
code-named Dixon next week. The chip will be used for portable computers and
will run at speeds of 400 megahertz, considerably higher than AMD's fastest
333-megahertz chips.
