The stunning $6.7-billion purchase of Web "portal" Excite by cable Internet
access provider @Home has shaken up the industry in many ways. But one
thing is clear: Cable modems are winning the access war, big time.

While local phone companies struggle to bring their form of fast Web access
into the home, the cable companies are moving aggressively to get Americans to
hook up to the 'Net through their TVs rather than PCs. @Home supplies
broadband Internet access over cable.

That should help buoy leading cable modem manufacturers,
such as Motorola, Northern Telecom and 3Com's U.S.
Robotics unit. It also should help General Instrument and
Scientific-Atlanta, the two largest manufacturers of set-top
cable boxes, which will include cable modems by midyear. Those stocks have
had a nice run-up recently, at least partly on the news of cable modems'
success.
