U.S. Aims to Limit Satellite Export License Reviews, WSJ Says

Washington, Jan. 20 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. State Department is aiming to finish reviews of U.S. commercial satellite export licenses within 90 working days, in an effort to ease concerns the department will impede industry competitiveness, the Wall Street Journal said, citing a report to Congress. The State Department -- which, for national security reasons, will take over commercial satellite export licensing from the Commerce Department on March 15 -- will still take longer than the 90 calendar days in which Commerce must complete license reviews, the Journal said. When commercial satellites come under the State Department's jurisdiction, they will also require congressional review, which could add two to six months to the process, according to the Journal.

Last month, a U.S. congressional investigating committee concluded that Loral Space & Communications Ltd. and General Motors Corp.'s Hughes Electronics damaged U.S. national security by transferring satellite technology to China. (WSJ 1/20 A2 www.wsj.com)
