There has been a lot of bad news lately.

AMD capturing > 50% of the retail market.
K6-3 in production.
K7 sampling.

It sounds like a real crisis to me. For Intel.

A "short squeeze" would show a huge runup in price as those who are short are getting squeezed. We're not seeing that. We're seeing a drop in price.

Steve, A short squeeze would cause a price runup. It is all fear and expectations and that accentuates the rise and fall of AMD, and indeed any tech stock. So many programs are poised to buy/sell and all the derivatives too have an avalanche effect. Whn they whole market drops by a certain amount they can be suppressed(computer trades) but individual companies can get hammered by them.
