Ex-President Ford joins NASD board

NEW YORK, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Gerald Ford rang the bell to start trading at the American Stock Exchange Thursday, kicking off his one-year term on the board of governors
of the National Association of Securities Dealers.

''We could not have a better qualified senior statesman to serve on our board and help guide our future,'' said Frank Zarb, chairman and CEO of NASD Inc., the largest securities industry, self-regulatory organization in the United States.

"As a new member of the NASD's Board of Governors, President Ford brings to our organization great talent and leadership, which will be especially valuable as we build a better marketplace for
global companies and investors, said Zarb, who served as energy czar in Ford's administration.

The Nasdaq-Amex Market Group, a NASD subsidiary, operates the Nasdaq Stock Market and the American Stock Exchange.
