re:why it's not off in the default mode

It's kinda like the overdrive override in my Dodge Ram. Overdrive is enabled unless I press the button to override. That's the nature of features. The feature becomes a part of the product (and selling point) which can be disabled by the user as desired.

This has been the way of new features in software, shouldn't be any different in hardware.
