I disagree. In most public companies IR is the one that sends faxes to analysts advising of conference calls, sets up press interviews for executives, promotes appearances by the company executives, including marketing executives, etc.
Are you trying to tell me that the guy in charge of sales is the one that should call the Wall Street Journal to tell them how well his department is doing and ask for an interview? You have to be kidding.
Any marketing person that does that should and would get fired.
