Encoders on way out at TV/COM

TV/COM International (Stand 1.118) has confirmed that it is scaling down its encoder business with the announcement at IBC of a partnership with leading encoder manufacture Divicom (Stand 1.262). It already has a similar deal in place with NDS.
The San Diego company will concentrate on supplying other parts of the digital TV chain, says Joe Zaller, TV/COM director of marketing. "A lot of people make encoders and we want to be able to work with them."

This latest agreement gives Divicom access to TV/COM's advanced digital set-top boxes, Java-based Domain Manage-ment System (DMS) and Conditional Access Control System (CACS). TV/COM will have access to Divicom's MPEG compression products.

"By bringing together these complementary technology portfolios both companies now have the ability to bid for and win a more extensive range of contracts, either individually or in partnership," says Divicom President, Tom Lookabaugh.

"Access to TV/COM products and technology means we can now offer our customers a more complete solution while maximising our most precious resource - our engineering talent."

TV/COM is one of the four manufacturers supplying set-top boxes for BSkyB's new digital satellite service. The device has just gone into production at Grundig's plant in Wales, and will be distributed under the Grundig brand.
