I have listened today to a call from Hong Kong where Anglogold and World Gold Council are sponsoring a competition to design jewelry , coins and other millenium souvenirs, in gold of course. I presume for consumption in China. The more I think about it, the more of these coins etc will be sold if they are available. I still have a British Crown minted for the 1951 worlds Fair held in London that my mother bought for me. This could make quite a large incremental demand over and above the Y2K kooks.
