>All are under attack by more efficient means (read lower headcount) of distribution. On line shopping, on-line banking, drugs.com, etc.
Where does consumption come from when efficiency eliminates income?

You don't know how many times I've dreamt of never going to the grocery store again, but I don't see it in the cards for the foreseeable future. At least not unless some aggressive competitor like Peapod adopts the Amazon model (i.e. lose money on each transaction in exchange for dominant marketshare <g>)

But seriously, your concerns are unfounded. To quote the only economics text I've ever read that didn't get any of the major issues stupidly wrong (and was a fun read to boot), P.J. O'Rourke's Eat the Rich, "Wealth is created when assets are moved from lower- to higher-valued uses." (pg. 6) Or perhaps "When James Watt invented that steam engine, thousands of ten-year-old boys who had been hauling coal carts were put out of work. However, this left them free to do other things, such as live to be eleven." (pg. 114)

Do yourself a favor and pick up this gem from Amazon...
