REPORT: E-tailers Feeling Pressures of Demand

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 21, 1999--The deluge of shoppers converging upon the Internet with dollars in hand was all a large number of investors needed to see to become certificate-holding members of the companies engaged in the newest form of commerce. However, recent reports in the mainstream media are beginning to intimate that the deluge may be too much for e-tailing companies.

Reports have noted that many e-tailers are behind in satisfying orders or that navigating sites overwhelmed by heavy traffic was nearly impossible at peak times.

Further information in regard to e-tail and the companies engaged in it is available free to investors, analysts and brokers at www.e-tail.org. Investors will also find free access to Real Time Quotes, news and other investment necessities at no charge.

"Most likely, this is a necessary growing pain for e-tail-involved companies," said Center for Internet Commerce spokesman Zeke Matters. "It seems apparent that many companies did not anticipate the response their sites have had. It has been amazing.

"In the inverse, problems as a result of demand also testify to the strength of that demand, and most any CEO will tell you they prefer the problems associated with growth to the problems associated with lethargy," added Matters.

The ever-increasing field of e-tailers now includes such names as Amazon.com (Nasdaq:AMZN), Barnes & Noble (NYSE:BKS), Ebay (Nasdaq:EBAY), Toys R Us (NYSE:TOY), Egghead.Com (Nasdaq:EGGS), At Home (Nasdaq:ATHM), Cyberian Outpost (Nasdaq:COOL), SkyMall (Nasdaq:SKYM), CDNow (Nasdaq:CDNW), Lands End (NYSE:LE), ONSale (Nasdaq:ONSL) and UBid (Nasdaq:UBID).

Additional information relative to the aforementioned equities has been archived at the C.I.C.'s free Web site located at www.e-tail.org.

Information in regard to the following technology equities can also be accessed at the site: Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN), LSI Logic (NYSE:LSI) and Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC).

The site may be accessed completely free of charge at www.e-tail.org from anywhere on the World Wide Web. Web outpaces catalogs for holiday shopping

A survey of holiday shoppers shows the Internet was the third most
popular vehicle for gift buying. Brand-name stores were tops with
88 percent of the respondents to the Zona Research Inc. study.
Discount retailers were the choice of 70 percent; the Net drew 53
percent while paper catalogs were used by 40 percent. The report
also says online shopping isn't likely to see any impact from the
typical post-holiday shopping slump. Almost 60 percent of the
people questioned indicated they would shop more online this year.
In fact, 10 percent indicated they will shop less in retail stores
in 1999.

Dropped by the local store Saturday. They were busy. Sales person answered a couple of questions on a program I am interested in. Surprised they had the program.
