Court Rules RCN Free to Aggressively Expand Its
Boston-Area Fiber Optic Network

Federal Judge Denies Cablevision Bid To Stifle Local Competition

BOSTON, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- A federal district judge in Boston today refused to issue an injunction to interfere with
RCN Corporation's (Nasdaq: RCNC - news) aggressive network expansion as a provider of competitive phone, cable and
Internet services to Boston-area residents. RCN operates in the Boston market through a joint venture with Boston Edison Co.

Judge Mark Wolf's ruling came in response to a suit filed last month by Cablevision of Boston, Inc., the latest attempt by the
former monopoly cable provider to thwart the arrival of competition in the city of Boston and surrounding areas in the form of
the RCN-Boston Edison joint venture.

''Today's ruling is a victory not only for RCN, but for all Boston-area residents who are clearly and forcefully demanding local
phone and cable competition,'' said RCN Chairman and CEO David C. McCourt. ''History has shown that competition
empowers consumers, resulting in vastly better value. We are proud to be serving as the vehicle for this empowerment in this
and other markets, providing residential customers, in increasing numbers, the ability to choose their phone and cable
providers.''

Cablevision last month filed suit seeking to block construction of RCN's state-of-the-art fiber optic network within the city of
Boston by alleging that RCN and Boston Edison violated city ordinances and bypassed normal procedures. In an oral
announcement from the bench today, Judge Wolf denied Cablevision's request for a preliminary injunction to stop RCN's
expansion in the Boston market. Judge Wolf said he expected to follow his oral ruling with a formal written opinion within the
next week, and further commented that RCN had fully complied with all applicable regulations and that Cablevision had little
likelihood of succeeding in its case against RCN and Boston Edison if it chose to proceed.

''This suit was just another in a long line of attempts by Cablevision to delay the arrival of competition through legal maneuvers,''
McCourt said. ''There is a demand for RCN's services, and a new network to the home capable of delivering those services
and more. Everyone but the monopolists recognizes this need.''

RCN Corporation (Nasdaq: RCNC - news) is the nation's first and largest single- source, facilities based provider of
telecommunications services to the residential market, the Northeast's largest regional Internet service provider (ISP) and the
nation's seventh largest ISP. The company is currently providing local and long distance phone, cable television and Internet
services in several markets from Boston to Washington, D.C. RCN has expanded its target market to include California's San
Francisco to San Diego corridor. Additional information about RCN's services may be found on the company's web site at
