>>Aopen computer with 450 P2, 128mb ram, AGP, 12 gig hd,zip
drive,2x dvd and 19" monitor all for $949.

That price is absurd on the face of it, so I would try to
find out what's wrong before jumping in. Find out the
specifics: Specific mobo, specific memory (manuf, 66 vs
100mhz, chip maker), specific case if it's an Aopen case, etc.

Aopen makes good mobos and cases, but SOMETHING is keeping
the price down. Maybe the 450pII is one of the relabeled
jobs or something. Anyhow, find out the specifics to make
an informed decision.

Is it worth it or should I
just go with the Aopen?

I came across the Aopen so called custom build program while I was researching their mobo. I had the sense that this program was just ramping up and the marketing nonsense was pretty thick. What you saw in the paper was no doubt a part of this rampup. I also had the sense that it had nothing to do with a true custom computer but was a marketing ploy to sell computers composed of all Aopen components. They manufacture alot more than mobos and cases. And like Spots said that price with even a crapola 19'' monitor speaks volumes about the level of marketeering going on here.

Sure, their mobos are of the highest quality and their cases have good reputation but you can do better. Same for their cd-rom drives, sound cards, and vid cards. The machine would probably have excellent hardware compatibilities but I know better choices are out there for the majority of these componentents.

Aopen sells the custom build program as a franchise deal to vendors. Some of these vendors I came across online seemed a little sleesy. So If you go that route, be careful, you are not dealing directly with Aopen, you are dealing with some vendor who bought into a franchise with Aopen. Too convoluted for my tastes....
