Benchmark Reaches Agreement With
Stratus Computer Ireland

ANGLETON, Texas, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Benchmark Electronics, Inc. (NYSE: BHE - news),
today announced that it has signed agreements to purchase certain assets and transfer certain
employees from Stratus Computer Ireland, a wholly- owned subsidiary of Ascend Communications
Inc. (Nasdaq: ASND - news). The companies plan on closing the transaction as soon as possible
following the necessary government approvals. Financial details related to the transaction were not
disclosed.

Benchmark will provide systems integration and testing services, for the next three years, to both
Ascend Communications Inc. and Stratus Holdings Limited.
