WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 22, 1999--
Franklin Telecom (OTC BB:FTEL.O) Friday announced that FNet Corp., its
Next Generation telephone company, is the first carrier to establish
telephone service for NATO serving multinational forces situated at
new locations near Kosovo.
A multi-line satellite telephone service was commissioned on
Jan. 5, 1999, at a new NATO base near Kosovo providing U.S., Canadian,
British and other multinational personnel with the ability to call
family and friends in any country. Subsequently, a large volume of
calls have been made utilizing FNet's Next Generation international
network.
FNet employees based at a new FNet regional office in Sarajevo
were able to quickly respond to the NATO request with stand-by
equipment. This brings to 12 the number of Stabilization Forces (SFOR)
and NATO locations operated by FNet. As a result of the rapid
deployment, a further two sites have been requested and are being
established in the region shortly.
"We have expanded the business acquired from Harris Corporation
last year to include new sites, lower calling rates and a number of
new features such as multilingual instructions," said Jim Magruder,
FNet's president. "Bosnia is a difficult area to provide services, but
with an office and staff with over six years' local experience, FNet
is well positioned to further expand its operations in the region."
FNet Vice President of Marketing Clive Raines said: "Keeping in
touch with family, friends and news is important when you are so far
from home in a cold winter. We are pleased to be able to bridge the
gap through this new relationship with NATO. The Bosnian operation is
part of FNet's mission to develop a global next generation IP
Telephony network."
A total of 15 satellite sites are planned to be operational by
April 1, 1999, along with new terrestrial services.
