RESEARCH ALERT - Merrill raises IBM price target

NEW YORK, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Merrill Lynch analyst Steven Milunovich raised his 12-month price target for International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - news) shares to $240 from $220, a market source said Thursday.

A research report by the analyst, obtained by Reuters, specified the new target. Earlier, a market source revealed the new number to Reuters.

''We expect IBM to meet or beat our Q4 earnings per share estimate of $2.45,'' the report said.

The new target is based on 31.4 times Merrill's 1999 earnings estimate for IBM of $7.65 per share.

The brokerage firm's recommendation on IBM is unchanged at near- and long-term buy.

IBM is scheduled to report results for the 1998 year and fourth quarter on Thursday.

IBM shares finished regular New York Stock Exchange trade Wednesday at 194-3/16.<<
