Ron - a challenge - can you document this ever actually happening or is it a purely theoretical assumption?: " And every once in a while, like oil, a big strike is discovered that completely disarticulates a gold standard economy"

I think it has never happened, and I've been following gold since the early 70s. There hasn't been a gold standard economy for a long time. It's a common fallacy that large gold strikes are likely - 100 million ounces a la Bre-X just don't seem to happen - but people have everlasting faith when the next one appears imminent. Goldstrike, Pernina, Pascua - these things are huge and out of the ordinary. dd.
