CDMA Group Calls for 3G Summit

By a staff reporter

19 January 1999

The CDMA Development Group (CDG), of Costa Mesa,
California, has called for a "3G summit" in an attempt to end
the deadlock over third-generation wireless technologies.

The summit aims to bring together operators, manufacturers
and industry groups from around the world to discuss 3G air
interface technologies that have been proposed to the
International Telecommunication Union for its ITU-2000
program. These include W-CDMA, which is backed by the
GSM community, and cdma2000, which is backed by operators
that currently use IS-95 as their air interface standard.

Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG, said, "We
believe a 3G Summit is necessary to bring all parties together
to finally resolve this issue. We hope to work closely with the
operators, manufactures and industry groups over the next
few weeks to end the deadlock."
