Does JINI sit on top of JENE?

I find it hard to believe that JINI requires JENE.

JINI does require some form of a Java virtual machine embedded in the devices. JENE is one of the candidates. Sun has another, HP has another. There are others. Unless the Sun one is a disaster, why would Sun be looking at Insignia instead of using their own.

That said, Insignia has long had a close relationship with Sun and if JENE is indeed superior to Sun's own technology, we could be in for a wild ride.

IMO, Sun is just one of many possible customers. Quantum is not the only disk drive company with ambitions to do more than just sit there and spin in place. The telecom companies with their portable phones and other gadgets are another huge market. Nobody on this thread has even mentioned the huge market for various control and monitoring devices, all of which tend to use microprocessors, and Java offers the manufacturers a huge opportunity to simplify their life and to make their devices more functional.

I recall a conversation with HP several years back when they said the market for embedded control and monitoring devices is several Billion Dollars. HP is a major player in that market, so is Honeywell.

So while I am reluctant to get too excited about the possibilities with Sun, there are huge opportunities out there for Insignia and JENE. In many ways being bought by someone now would be a shame, but then there is the saying about the bird in hand ...
