Michelle, >>The lower groups are excluded from home ownership in many areas of the country, this is not a good thing, and the wealthier groups are moving away from institutions such as public schools (which btw have also been gutted by republican policies) such that no one attends public schools anymore except those that cannot afford any alternatives. These trends are all very negative<< Home ownership is at historic highs across the country. New housing permits continue to soar. Now just who do you think are the people buying those homes. Only the wealthy? Hardly. New housing is generally reflective of a demand for existing homeowners wishing to "move up". This is a pattern most exemplified by the middle class. And yes you can give credit to Reagan, since declining interest rates is the biggest driver in the demand for housing. We had double digit rates when Carter was in office. Reagan had the Dems on the ropes when he was first elected, landslide elections have a tendency to do that<g> He started the trend to lower taxes and lower spending, but unfortunately when Bush was elected he defected on the tax front and raised taxes again to appease the Dems. Voters turned him out because of it, we've had 6 years of Clinton and NO TAX RELIEF. So if you can't afford to buy a house in ultra expensive CA, why don't you consider writing your Senators and Congressman and most especially your newly elected Democrat Governor and express your desire for a hefty tax break. If you're like most of us, nearly 40% of your income is being diverted to the federal, state and local taxes for dubious programs and meanwhile you're the one getting SQUEEZED. You're a mathematician, figure it out. Just how much of a home could you afford if you had as little as 10 percent of YOUR money put back into your pocket. bp
