My inlaws visited the Soviet Union before it broke apart. They enjoyed it very much. I visited Yugoslavia just before it self destructed. The people were very curious about western visitors.

If I could I would visit the Baltic countries and Czech republic. I think they are eastern enough to be exotic but have not broken down as much as Russia. Still, if you know someone to visit it makes the trip much better than just touristing.

Even difficult trips can be arranged if you ask enough travel agents.

Michelle----
My wife had a Russian exchange student work for her part time. He was a great guy, but a lousy worker. Only because she liked him and didn't want to get him kicked out of school did she not fire him. He had no sense of responsibility about showing up, calling if there were a problem, getting in on time, limiting his breaks so that they didn't harm work flow, and so forth. In other words, we were led to suspect that the Soviet system had utterly destroyed the work ethic in this otherwise intelligent, considerate young man.
