"The Tokyo stock market is in the process of an upturn," said Masaaki Higashida, a dealer at Nomura Securities Co. Ltd. Investor sentiment got a boost from a string of bank mergers and tie-ups and tough warnings from the country's top bank reform commission, which said it wants an end to the bad loan problem by March this year. This will "bring relief to the market by increasing stability in the financial system," he said.
