Dykes, sills, and the crator facies (top part of a kimberlite pipe which makes it to surface) cool most rapidly so the diamonds are preserved. If the kimberlite cools slowly the diamonds get altered and reabsobed. I dont understand the physics of it all but that seems to be the way it is. That is why most pipes are richest at the top and get leaner poorer as you go deeper into them. The rule of thumb seems to be the faster the kimberlite cools the better.
