The functional design view of the G3 is perhaps more objective than subjective. Importantly, it IS easy to open the new G3 and gain access to the motherboard for upgrades and such. One could argue about the functional design disadvantages of having a tower only configuration, I guess. Maybe 'tower only' is the trade-off to easy access?

Opinions on color and design become almost purely subjective. You conclude that the 'bubble gum' colors appeal primarily to the very young. Both the new VW AND new 911 come in many of these 'bubble gum' colors, and the 911 is hardly targeted at the same youth audience you refer to. For every conservative wood panelled office suite, there is many a high tech office loft.

Colors and aesthetics in computer design will probably start to change more often like fashion cycles, especially regarding very cheap devices. And computer aesthetics may start to fall into different modes of fashion like Professional, Casual, Formal, Sport, Youth, etc.

Maybe a carbon fibre black case with titanium metal trim for a more professional look? Surely there is a better aesthetic solution than beige, and that is where Apple is going today.

Users of the expensive peripherals you speak of will be using FireWire tomorrow and in the 21st century. FireWire is not only the standard for such high bandwidth peripherals like digital cameras and digital video, but it is being adopted and used by almost every major manufacturer. Since Wintel PCs are making the FireWire/USB transition as well, migration to Wintel won't help you with your present peripherals.

Is that so? Very good. Now what does that have to do with Apple and its new Macs?

Design is positive for the professional as well.

As former (I sold after 25 years of operation) President and principal share holder of a 600 employee/ 45 million revenue operation I view the design issue as very positive. I suppose CPA firms and tight law firms and "we are all very adult" here operations would not go for color. (Starting to sound like Pleasantville). I would have bought them in a flash.
