Gary, many people invest in BEARX as a hedge. Not necessarily it is meant to be the only investment in a portfolio. I was in the fund prior to the october 97 crash and until Jan 98. It did ok during that period. So, if you can time the market, BEARX can be a good vehicle in your IRA - it may the only way to short.

I think he has better grasp of the economy in general and some busineses in particular. As with his performance, I sympathize with him because he is fighting a mania. Besides, the stocks he is short (he discloses in his fund prospectus and he has an advisory service which sells short-recommendations) become subjects of short-squeeze by the likes of Jeff Vinik. Regardless, I can't see why a professional money manager can lose so much in such a short-time.
