Insignia's virtual machine technology has been more than 10 years in the making.

The Java virtual machine is the culmination of over 10 years of work and products. The company was founded in 1986.

The first product was Virtual PC (VPC) - later renamed to SoftPC. SoftWindows came out it the early 90's and the latest iteration is SoftWindows98.

Along the way, IBM, Digital, HP, Tektronix, Sun, Apple, and even Microsoft licensed or resold Insignia's products and technology. But PC emulation is a tough place to make a living, even though MS still ships some INSGY technology with every copy of NT.

A virtual machine that runs Java is a natural next step in the evolution of the technology.

While Charles Tutt is right that JENE is not the only Java implementation for embedded systems, I have been told that it is the only one that is 100% compatible with the full Java spec. This should give Insignia a big advantage.
