It's also important to reform the Alternative Minimum Tax. This egregious penalty tax hits families who claim "too many" exemptions, credits and deductions, or families whose average tax rates are deemed--in the kooky world of the tax code--"too low." The Republicans' new, flatter rate structure might have the perverse effect of forcing additional families into this purgatorial penalty box. Fortunately, Senate Finance Chair Bill Roth swears up and down that AMT relief will find a place in the overall 1999 tax agenda.
