The Vodaphone-Airtouch merger has to be good for Qualcomm. I, and others on the thread, have felt that the operators are the key to a compromise. Irwin Jacobs said that the operators would have an impact.

Since Vodaphone is so large and is operating both GSM and cdma, I would think it would be uniquely qualified to "get through" to a lot of the carriers. It can speak from a carrier perspective on at least two of the platforms.

Its interest would, I think, be in having an efficient upgrade for its world-wide system. Everyone expects more consolidation, and that means more carriers will want to be able to move in the direction of a converged 3G standard or multiple standards that are efficient and lead eventually to onemore unified system for each carrier.
